Why RDF smells

Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is a mixed, organic-rich feedstock. Stored and handled at a cement plant, it releases methane, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia — an odour and worker-health problem with no scope to pause fuel operations.

Fogging a bio-film

OED is fogged and sprinkled across RDF storage and handling zones at roughly 1 litre per tonne, forming a protective bio-film that neutralises odour-causing gases and reduces the smell of fresh incoming waste.

In practice

At UltraTech Cement (Manikgarh and Rawan), smell was neutralised within 1–2 minutes of application. After about a month of regular dosing, the plant atmosphere stayed largely free of harmful gases — with zero operational downtime.
